In the Market Place
EGGS FOR PRESERVING DEMAND UP TO SUPPLIES Hen eggs fell a further penny a dozen at the City Markets this morning, being now on a par in leading grades with duck eggs. Supplies are increasing rapidly, but so far the demand has grown at almost the same pace owing to large supplies being bought privately for preserving. Onions will be in short supply until the arrival of a shipment from America next week. There are good quantities of new potatoes coming forward, and heavy supplies of cabbage, lettuce, cauliflower and celery. Other vegetables in season are also plentiful. Only a small shipment of mandarins arrived by the Aorangi, mostly in good condition, although some were poor. Quantities were sold yesterday from Cs to 9s 6d a case. Australian Pines brought high rates. There will now bo no direct Sydney boat for a fortnight, and stocks will be depleted. Little change has taken place in prices of local products. Apples are still ruling very low, many lines of Delicious varieties being in a wastey condition. Lemons, with a poor demand, are low in price, as are also small Poorman oranges. Hothouse tomatoes are in short supply, and tree tomatoes slow of sale, except in the best qualities. Passions have improved considerably in value, and Nelis pears are bringing better prices for good quality. A further shipment of Californian grapes is expected through Wellington shortly.
