DEATH-DEFYING SKIDS ON WET MOTOR TRACK
FIRES AND HECTIC PACE ITALIAN WINS T.T. RACE LONDON, Satuiday.
Thrilling incidents marked the tourist trophy motor race at Belfast today. The distance was 420 miles over a 14-mile circuit. Captain Waite in an Austin lapped the Ballystockart Bridge at too great; a speed and his machine captized among a crowd. Captain Waite, who was underneath the car, was removed in an unconscious condition. Kaye Don in an Alfa Romeo struck a bridge and his car leapt into the air and overturned and caught fire. Don was rescued when he was actually being scorched, tie had a rib broken. A frantic rush followed to remove the burning car from the path of others, which were travelling at a speed of nearly K. S. Peacock, in a Lea Francis, skidded practically the whole length of the main street of Newtonards and ended by partially demolishing a butcher’s shop. BRITISH HOPES DIE The greatest tragedy for British hopes was when Captain Birkin, in a Bentley, was striving to overtake the Italian leaders. As he was approaching the Ballystockart Bridge the near side front wheel came off his car, which crashed into the wall and was partially wrecked. The crowd was amazed to see Captain Birkin step out only dazed. The police estimate that 500,000 people were on the course, which 1,500 constables patrolled magnificently. The Italian Alfa Romeo team was overwhelmingly victorious. Nuvolari was first, with a speed Qt 1 0.88 miles an hour. Campari was second, with a speed of 70.82 miles, ancT Andvarzi third, 70.81 miles. The Italians set a hectic pace. Skids became terrifying and the race became most tense when heavy rain made the course as slippery a/s glass. Unbelievable risks were taken as the three daredevil Italians went round racing one another, the crowd generously cheering them every yard of the course. NEW ZEALANDER KILLED ONCE AUCKLAND JOCKEY MELBOURNE, Sunday. In a motor-car accident near Koo%yong, Victoria, Alfred E. Foreman, aged 42, formerly a New Zealand jockey, was killed instantly. Four other persons in the car escaped injury. The late Mr. A. E. Foreman left Auckland 10 years ago and had lived in Australia ever since. He had not ridden in any races for the past 15 years. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Foreman, reside in Wheturangi Road. Green Lane.
