MANAWHENUA BEATEN MARGIN OF 34 POINTS Press Association NEW PLYMOUTH, Today. In the curtain-raiser to the representative match between Taranaki and Manawhenua at Pukekura Park, Auckland Grammar School beat New Plymouth High School by 12 points to 3. The weather was fine and warm and there was a large crowd present. In the big game Taranaki went down the field from the start. The “ ball came from the scrum and flashed out to Watson, who ran down the field and in-passed to Brown, who scored a good try well out. The kick failed. Taranaki 3,. Manawhenua 0. Then smart passing sent Fookes away, only to be hauled down inches from tho line. Taranaki kept up the pressure when Bramwell failed to clear. The crowd had a laugh when Page secured in his own territory and ran the whole length of the field before he realised the whistle had gone. Galbraith took a pot at goal from in front, but just missed, and from the dropout Robinson marked and drop-kicked a good goal, putting Taranaki six points up. Taranaki 6, Manawhenua 0. Manawhenua was outclassed and Brown drew the defence to send Watson round under the posts. Collins converted. Taranaki 11, Manawhenua 0. Taranaki’s next score came when Fookes punted over Bramwell’s head and beat him for the ball. Collins converted from right on the touchline. Taranaki 16, Manawhenua 0. An offside by the home backs gave Roddick a chance, but his kick went wide. Taranaki added another three points when Fookes raced over after a passing rush. The kick just missed. Taranaki 19, Manawhenua 0. Gargan broke clean away from a scrum and passed to Galbraith, who scored under the posts. Collins converted, pxitting Taranaki 24 points up. Another three were added when Collins put over a. penalty kick and halftime came without further score. Taranaki had opened up the game all the way and the hard, fast running of the backs gave Manawhenua no rest, while the home forwards had command in the tight and loose. On resuming Taranaki was soon 30 points up, Collins landing a penalty goal. Taranaki kept Manawhenua, penned down and Walter then went over from a loose rush and Collins missed an easy kick. Taranaki 33, Manawhenua 0. Fookes then raced down the line to score in the corner. The kick failed. Taranaki was still making all the pace and Galbraith and Brown just missed tries. Watson was injured and tho game was held up for a time. Manawhenua then had a turn on the attack and came near to scoring, but tho defence held. At last, however, Manawhenua was rewarded and Moffatt went over for a good try. which Mullins improved, leaving the final score: Taranaki 29 Manawhenua 5 COLLEGIATE TOURNEY PLAY IN CHRISTCHURCH Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. In the inter-collegiate Rugby tourney at Christchurch yesterday, Nelson College drew with Christ’s College, six points all. Each side scored two tries. The teams gave a magnificent exposition of the game. kelson had much the better of the second spell, but was not. able to add to the score. Tho scorers for Christ’s College were Monteath and Rolleston, and for Nelson Newman and Buttress. The Wellington College team did not seem to be fully extended to defeat Wanganui Collegiate School by 3 3 points to 6. The scorers for Wellington wero Bird, Watt and McKenzie. Carlson converted two of the tries. For Wanganui Bunny scored a penalty goal and Coleman a try. Wellington and Nelson will play off for tho championship and Wanganui and Christ’s College will play for the wooden spoon. EASY WIN FOR OTAGO SOUTH CANTERBURY DEFEATED Press Association TIMARU, Saturday. Otago scored a runaway victory over Bouth Canterbury today by 37 points to 16. The greater part of the afternoon was fine, but the concluding stages of the game were played in a heavy fog. which came up suddenly. Otago was superior to the home side in all departments. The visitors opened strongly, the backs and forwards indulging in sweeping rushes which sorely tried the home defence. The of the local players was poor and their tackling was weak. Toward the end of the spell South Canterbury brightened up, and the game was much brighter. Otago led at the interval by 16 points to 5. In the second spell South Canterbury staged some brilliant rushes, but more often than not their efforts lacked finish.
