NORTHCOTE branch OF MOTHERS’ UNION HOLDS BRIGHT SOCIAL

FUNDS FOR BRETT MEMORIAL ORPHANS’ HOME At the Parish Hall, Xorthcote, on Thursday evening:, the branch of the Mothers’ Union held a most successful social and dance for the purpose of supplying requisites for the equipment of the Brett Memorial Orphans’ Home. Taka puna. Songs were given by Miss Edna Peace. Miss Vera JStackpoole and the Rev. F. W. Wilkes. Airs. E. Joll being the accompanist. A dramatic recitation by Mrs. E. J. Mays was enthusiastically received. A competition was held and created great amusement, the judges being Mrs. A. Campbell, Mrs. A. Cowie and Mrs. J. Cotter. The prize winners were Mrs. G. B. Minns. Miss M. Newman, and Airs. A. J. Lennon. A “slave market” was also one of the attractions, the stage being completely transformed into a Alorocean tent, while the sheik auctioneer wore a Moroccan costume kindly lent by Air. J. Weeks. Tho “slaves” auctioned were robed in white anti heavily veiled, ift accordance with Oriental custom! and much amusement and spirited competition ensued in the bidding. After the sale a grand march took place. Dancing was indulged in to music played by Mr. B. Mayall. A special vote of thanks was accorded the assistant-secretary, Airs. J. Blake, and Air. X. Cross for their efforts in organising the social.
