AIRPLANE HITS FENCE

MACHINE DAMAGED, PILOT UNHURT CRASH NEAR WELLINGTON Press Association WELLINGTON, Sunday. A Wellington pilot, Mr. R. Berryman, met with an accident in his machine at Paekakakriki this afternoon. The airplane struck a fence in landing and was damaged, but the pilot was not hurt. Two pilots trained by the Wellington Club, Messrs. C. M. Duthie and R. Berryman, went on a flight to Feilding yesterday morning. Mr. Duthie using a club Moth and Mr. Berryman flying in his Avro-Avian. The return journey was begun at 1.45 p.m. today, and all went well until they reached Paekakariki. There they met a strong southerly wind and ran .into thick, low clouds, which made it impossible for the fliers to continue on the course they had planned. They then signalled to each other to land, the object being to secure more petrol for the fight into Wellington by a longer route.

Mr. Duthie landed in a paddock, but Mr. Berryman made a couple of vain attempts to land in the field and finally hit a fence, his machine being upset. Mr. Duthie refuelled and came on to Wellington, arriving at 5.15 p.m. Mr. Berryman returned by motor-car later.
