OTAHUHU CONVENT SCHOOL
COMMEMORATIVE TREES PLANTED
In continuance of a campaign to improve the grounds of St. Cecilia’s Convent school at Otahuhu, a number of trees were planted on Friday afternoon. At the invitation of the pupils, a large number of parents and friends were present, and assisted with the planting. In welcoming the visitors, the Rev. Father Dunphy thanked all those who had assisted with the ground improvements.
During the afternoon two commemorative trees were planted. The first, a fine totara, was planted by the senior pupil to mark the gaining of the Rhodes scholarship by Mr. Ernest Bailey, who had commenced his scholastic career at St. Cecilia’s Convent school. The second tree was planted by Father Dunphy, to commemorate the name of a well-beloved pioneer priest, Father O’Hara, who had laboured in the parish for over 40 years.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Cr. Grey announced the winner of a competition for the best collections of specimens of native flora, and congratulated the competitors on the very fine results attained. Miss Eileen McAnulty, the winner, was presented with a book, and a special prize was awarded to Miss Leonore Dudley, whose-collection was also of outstanding merit.
Before dispersing, the children gave three cheers for Messrs. Frank Green and Son, of Ellerslie, and Mr. T. Dock, of Mangere, for. their generosity in donating the trees and shrubs, and also for Cr. Grey, who had arranged the function.
