FISH MARKET FIRE
INCENDIARISM SUSPECTED USED MATCHES FOUND Incendiarism is suspected in connection with a fire at the Auckland Fishermen's Co-operative, Ltd., at Nelson Street Wharf, shortly after six o’clock this morning. The shop escaped, but the office at the opposite end of the building was damaged. The finding of five used matches under the burned edge of a quantity of wrapping paper on the shop counter, and scratches on the main door at the other end of the building, where it is believed that entrance was effected, are reasons for incendiarism being suspected. However, the paper on the counter failed to blaze, but the office is a mass of charred woodwork and burned files. Nothing of value has been missed and the books and records are safe. The manager, Mr. J. H. Deighton, says that three weeks ago the building was entered, the cash register rifled, and the till smashed, but the intruders got nothing for their pains. The building, which is owned by the Auckland Harbour Board, is not covered by insurance, the board taking its own risk, and the contents were not insured.
