YOUNG GARDENERS
KOWKAI SCHOOL WORK
Since the establishment of the Kowhai Junior High School the pupils have taken an active interest in gardening. The gardens and playgrounds are now a testimonial to the splendid work done by the children. The improvements have been effected after school hours by voluntary labour. The children work individually or in organised parties under the supervision of teachers. At present some of the boys are levelling a section behind the school buildings. The work was started only a few weeks ago. An un-
sightly hollow has already been nearly filled and an old stone wall has been demolished. Grass and trees will eventually be put down in the section. If any of the boys shows outstanding ability he is given special horticultural training.
The flower-beds are now well planted and should, in a few weeks, make a fine display. The native plantation 3s one of the most Interesting portions of the grounds. It is devoted entirely to the cultivation of New Zealand shrubs and trees.
