THE MAGIC OAK TREE

One day a little girl named Nancy was playing in the woods. She wandered further and further away from her path in search of bluebells. When she had enough, she looked round for the path, but found it nowhere in sight, so she sat down under the branches of a spreading oak tree. Now this tree was enchanted and could speak, and it told Nancy stories of little woodland folk, who gathered round it just before dusk. Just then a flapping of wings and a sound of tiny feet came through the woods. “Here they come,” whispered the tree. Nancy listened, spellbound, as the noise grew louder, then into view came a flock of birds, and after them raced the merry little squirrels, and the fleetfooted rabbits. As soon as they got there the merry little creatures climbed and flew into the tree, while the rabbits, and some of the others, played on the ground. They spent most of their time asking Nancy questions, to all of which she gave suitable answers. At last it was time to go, and a bird went home with her. “Come again,” the bird said on parting. “Be sure I will.” answered Nancy. —Patricia Lees, aged 9.
