MAIL-SORTER FINED m “Though accused has previously borne a good character, that cannot condone this offence,’* said ChiefDetective Hammond, at the Police Court today, when Sydney 'YV alter Barnett, a mail-sorter, aged 45, appeared on two charges of committing indecent acts. According to Mr. Hammond, cused had been watched by detectives for the past few weeks in connection with offences said to have occurred in Elliott Street. On Friday, August 15. accused had been caught in tne Mr. F. D. McLiver. for accused, admitted the facts concerning 15, but denied the other charge. Tne alleged offence was due to a physical disability of accused, he said, and was not the result of an indecent nature. Barnett had been in the employ 0 the Post and Telegraph for 20 years and had an excellent character. t . “It is an extraordinary case, exten - ing over 12 months,” said Chief-Detect-ive Hammond. „ “I contradict and deny that, sa counsel. . Mr. Hunt: I’m satisfied about liappened. He is fined <£2o, or thr months’ imprisonment in default.
