PRINCE WAS A GOLFER TILL CRACKS GOT HIM

CRAMPED HIS STYLE BACK TO FORM NOW Reed. 11.50 a.m. LONDON, Thurs. The Prince of Wales’s sporting proclivities have been strikingly demonstrated on his present holiday, which he largely devoted to recovering his lost golfing skill. For several years his handicap was 16, but recently, to use the Prince’s own phrase, his game was ’’gone to pot.” Few of his te shots were successful, though he spent hours at practice. He asked the advice of leading English and American experts, and indeed, finally found himself worse than h 21 man. Then the Prince met a famous English golf teacher with whom he is now practising at Le Touquet, Sunningdale and elsewhere, going out every morning with a c.ople of hundred balls and a couple of caddies. For three and a-half hours a day the Prince hit balls at the rate of ten a minute, correcting his faults until his driving skill returned. He went round the short course at Le Touquet in two' over fours and later showed himself equal to a five handicap player. What had happened was the Prince in pursuit of perfection had accepted the advice and tuition of all golfing experts, including Bobby Jones, Hagen and Diegel, and his own natural plav was thus ruined. However, his earlier easy style and confidence have now returned. He flew to Le Touquet in his own airplane today in the face of a 60-mile an hour gale, accompanied by his golf tutor, put on the culminating polish, and has now recovered his skill.
