AUCKLAND ATHLETE OUT OF FINALS PEARCE WINS SCULLS Reed. 10.40 a.m. TORONTO, Thurs. Those who qualified for the 100 yards dash final on Saturday are: Williams (Canada), Gerhardt (South Africa), Fitzpatrick (Canada), Englehart (England), Page (England) and Legg (South Africa). Elliott (New Zealand) ran third to Page, who was first, and Legg, who was second. Those who qualified in the 440 yards are:—Golding (Australia), Wilson (Canada), Bascombe (Australia), and Brangwin (England). Golding won easing up over Wilsen. Australia took the second heat in smart fashion when Bascombe defeated Brangwin and Golver (Canada). It was the Australian’s race all the way, and he finished strongly. The three-mile run resulted:—Tomlin (England), 1; Hillhouse (Australia), 2; Winfield (England), 3. Time, 14min 27 l-ssec. This is a Canadian record. In the Empire marathon run Wright (Scotland) was first, Ferris (England) second, and Miles (Canada) third. Those who qualified in the 120yds high hurdles were: —Viljoen (South Africa), Lord Burghley (England), Hart (South Africa), Davies (South Africa), Gaby (England), Harper (England). The fastest time was 14 7-10 sec, by Davies —a Canadian record. Lord Burghley was second to Viljoen. Golding (Australia) was first in his heat in the 440 yards. The running broad jump was won by Viljoen (South Africa). Bob Pearce (Australia) won the single sculls. Beresford (England) was second," Bradley (England) third, and Wright (Canada) fourth. The time was Smin 33sec. The Empire Fours, with coxswain, resulted: —England 1, Canada 2, New Zealand 3. Time, 7min 43sec. In the bowling rinks New Zealand lost to South Africa by 18 to 19. Scotland beat Canada by 21 to 19. England was crowned the champion. Canada and South Africa tie for second place. In the bowling doubles McWhannell and Fielding (N.Z.) defeated Hall and Giovanette (South Africa) by 21 to 13. Hills and Wright CEngland) defeated Reid and Moore (Canada) by 17 to 14. By its victory New Zealand becomes the chief threat to the Mother Country for the doubles supremacy. FOUR-YEAR GAMES At a meeting of delegates at Hamilton it was decided to continue the Empire Games at regular intervals. A committee was appointed to arrange details. The members are: Messrs. T. R. Loudon (Canada), R. H. Weir (Australia), Captain Welsford (South Africa), R. J. Hobbs (New Zealand), J. T. Wadmore (England). They will report to a second meeting on Friday. It is considered probable that the four years’ plan will be adopted. BOXING RESULTS The following are results of the semi-finals In the boxing contests held today:— list 61b Class. —D. C. Gallagher (Australia) defeated Ed Pierce (South Africa), and F. Malin (England) defeated Teddy Phillips (Canada). lOst 71b Class.—Leonard Hall (South Africa) defeated F. Brookman (England). 9st Class. —F. R. Meachem (England) defeated Paul Necteau (Canada). Bst Class. —T. Pardoe (England) defeated R. Galloway (Canada). 9st 91b Class. —James Rowland (Scotland) defeated Albert Love (England). Bst 61b Class. —H. Mizler (England) defeated Thomas Holt (Scotland). The finals of the wrestling bouts resulted: —Bantam-weight: J. Trifunov (Canada) defeated Joe Reid (England). Light-weight: Sowie Thomas (Canada) defeated Harold Angus (England). In the hammer-throw final Nokes (England), was first, Britton (Ireland), second, and Cameron (Canada), third. The winner threw 154 feet 7J inches.
