JUNIOR NOTES The exceptionally keen rivalry in the lower grade competitions has quickened the interest of followers of the game, especially now that the first two rounds have shown the teams which will probably figure in the section finals. The championship battle in the second grade promises to provide some exceptionally fine football, there being at least four teams in the running. College Rifles, who have not been defeated this season, are topping the ladder in the A section with 26 points, while Grafton, with either one or two matches yet to play, has 20 points. Unless the leaders are beaten in the next game or so, it is certain that they will be one of the finalists for the championship. In the B section Ponsonby, with 28 points, is making a strong bid for the premiership, but it may find Grammar Colts, who are only two points behind, a very difficult proposition. * * * The third open grade championship leaders are all on fairly even terms. At the end of the second round Newton was leading Ponsonby in the A section by one point, the points being 16 L 15, while in the B section Penrose has an advantage of three points over Eden, the figures standing 22-19. 'At' the end of the second round in the third intermediate grade, Grafton seemed assured of winning the A section. as it had 22 points—a lead of six points over its two nearest opponents, North Shore and Northcote. The Magpies also made a good showing in the B section, in which with 28 points they are topping the ladder four points in front of Y.M.C.A. Both Manukau and Otahuhu were in the running in the C section, the West Coasters having a lead of two points over the country fifteen. * * * One of the keenest tussles of the competitions is in the fourth grade, the A section of which has not yet completed the second round matches. The completion of second round fixtures In the B section, however, left Manukau and Penrose on level terms with 15 points each. Considerable difficulty has been experienced in arranging representative fixtures for the lower grades this season on account of delays and interruption of competition matches. It is considered probable, however, that Second grade representative fifteens will be sent both to Thames and to the Manukau sub-union during the latter part of the season. * * * An indication of the value of quick and cheap motor transport has been given this season in the number of visits to other centres made by clubs on their own initiative. Particularly has this been noticeable in the’ lower grades. Trips have been jnade or are contemplated to Huntly, Waiuku and other, centres by St. Heliers, Ponsonby, Marist, College Rifles. There have been several return visits from country teams, notably from Huntly. On Saturday last Huntly juniors visited Auckland, where they defeated Technical Old Boys intermediate team after a good game by nine points to nil.
