SOLICITOR GAOLED
FRAUD CHARGES INVOLVE £6OO “DETERRENT” PUNISHMENT Press Association GISBORNE, Today. “I recognise that the severest part of your punishment will be that you will be removed from the roll of solicitors, but that Isn’t sufficient and it Is my duty to Impose a term of imprisonment,” said Mr. Justice Reed when Robert George Gardiner Bain, aged 26, a barrister and solicitor, appeared before him in the Supreme Court this morning for sentence for theft by fraud. His Honour remarked that the punishment must be one that would act as a deterrent to others against interfering with their clients’ money and ordered that Bain be detained for reformative purposes for 12 months. Bain pleaded guilty in the lower court to 20 charges of fraudulently omitting to account for moneys received, thereby committing theft. The total amount of his defalcations was approximately £6OO.
