PREPARING FOR TANGI
LATE SIR MAUI POMARE’S FUNERAL BURIAL NEAR WAITARA Press Association Elaborate preparations are being made at the historic Manakorihi Pa at Waitara for the tangi on the arrival of Sir Maui Pomare’s ashes and the interment at the pa. Maoris are expected to be present from all parts of the Dominion in great numbers and special arrangements will be made for their accommodation and victualling. The Native Department is providing tents and cooking utensils. Each party in Parliament will send representatives. Probably those members will catch the special train from Waikanae with the ashes, which train will also convey mourners and Maori friends from the South. The scene on the arrival of the ashes will not only be one of solemnity but also of striking interest to the pakeha, as will be the addresses which are to follow. A commencement was made • this morning with the excavation for the vault in the precincts of the Manakorihi meeting house, where the remains will be placed. Above it a memorial stone will later stand* and travellers on the main road will see on high ground the resting place of one who rendered much service to his country.
