CONCERT AT ONEHUNGA
The efforts of Mr. A. E. Trayes, headmaster of the Onehunga District School, and his staff of teachers, were rewarded by the appreciation of a large audience in the Foresters’ Theatre, Onehunga, last evening, when a highly successful school concert was held under their direction. The entertainment, which wafe in aid of the school grounds improvement fund, gave evidence of a long and careful training of the school children. The lengthy and varied programme consisted of instrumental selections, choral numbers, folk and action songs, Dutch and rythmic dancing, drill and playlets, the honours being equally divided between the different standards. Deserving of special mention was the creditable presentation of the trial scene from the “Merchant of Venice,” in which the following scholars took part:—Duke of Venice, George Halford; Antonio, Billy Jordan; Bassanio, Noel Ireland; Gratiano, Fred Levett; Solanio, Tom Bishop; Narissa, Claudia Fairhead; Portia, Kathleen Farrell; Shylock, Raleigh Trayes. Linda Hanna and Desmond Henday were heartily applauded for their duet “The Milkmaid.” and Aileen Tornquist, Peggy Gatfield. Doris Lush, Ruth Fitton and Ray McGuire, fifth standard pupils, were successful in portraying the various characters in the playlet. “An Unexpected Guest.” The fourth standard was represented by Phyllis Greenwood, Joan McDougall, Madge Goldsbury, Frank Box and Gordon Parkinson, whose and dance, “The Midshipmite,” was well received, as was “The Dancing Lesson,” by Thelma Hargreaves, Nita Short, Ruth Laking and Elsie Hatfield.
