MURDERER SHOULD SUICIDE Modern View by Dean CRITIC SAYS CHURCH ACTS TOO LATE SHOULD a murderer be allowed to commit suicide instead of being hanged? Dean Inge, by answering “Yes” to this question, has aroused a spirited controversy in England. * Mr. G. B. Shaw agrees, and says poisons and chemicals should be given every condemned man. If he fails to use them—then hang him ! Speakers at the Modern Churchmen’s Conference considered the church acts too late in social reforms.

United I*.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 12.40 p.m. LONDON Tuesday. Outspokenness was the keynote of the Modern Churchmen’s Conference at Oxford, where Dean Inge yesterday declared the right of murderers to suicide.

Today Dr. C. P. Russell said the Church today admits that playing games on Sunday is not necessarily displeasing to God. It should have said that 25 years ago. “Xu 30 years the church will be quite ready to demonstrate that birthcontrol Is a desirable Christian practice,” he said, “but who will listen to them?”

“The tragic thing about the Church of England is that it does not give its blessing to any change of outlook until it is too late to be of any value.” The Rev. C. J. Ifardwick asked what part will the Church play in the crea-

tive epoch ahead? The bishops had been talking, but what had they said? They had said more than many people had expected them to,, but alas! the leadership and initiative passed from them. They were fighting a rearguard action.

Dean Inge is the centre of considerable criticism for his viewpoint on murderers, but Mr. George Bernard Shaw is in full agreement. “I always feel deeply obliged to the murderer who suicides,” he says. “It saves a great deal of trouble and expense. Every condemned man should have a collection of poisons and chemicals put in his way. If he choses to use them, well —

“The murderer should he told he will be hanged on a certain day. If he is not dead after every possible means of suicide has been provided, then hang him.”
