LEAGUE MANAGER ON SYDNEY PAPERS “GAVE US A RAW DEAL” The standard of criticism in the Press of Australia, and particularly that cf Sydney, was one of the most astounding things the New Zealand League team struck in Australia. This opinion was voiced by the team manager of the side, Mr. W. J. Taylor, j speaking at the official welcome home j to the team by the council of the ! Yew Zealand Rugby Football League i at the Commercial Hotel last evening. J “The Press was most abusive.” Mr. j Taylor said. “If it could not find anything constructive to say about us. it j -aid something destructive. The \ ‘stranding rumour* was only one of the j things we had to put up with.” “The papers gave us a raw deal.” ; Mr. Taylor con-j tinued. “and that * is something the Press of New Zet- i and does not do. Lloodness knows j where we would get if our Press carried on like the Australian Press.” ,ic* concluded. The captain of the side, Mr. C. K. Gregory, said that ho could not say enough about tht?
Press ‘‘over there.” “In one column j they would say that their own team j was the best in the world, and in the > next they would say that we were' ‘mugs’ for not beating it.” The financial manager of the team, j Mr. A. Ferguson, also referred to the i hostile criticism of the Australian j Press. _________
