MEMORIAL TO DR. LEYS REPORT FROM DIRECTOR The design for a memorial in rnemorv of the fate Dr. Leys was submitted to the Auckland Institute and Museum Council at its meeting yesterday afternoon by the president, Mr. H. E. Vaile. The memorial is to be in bronze and will be erected on one. cl the entrance pillars. The design was considered to be dignified and appropriate, and authorisation was given for the work to be done.; The council will meet at 4 o’clock in the afternoon in future. The time of tho meeting was previously altered from 4 p.m. to 2 p.m. for the convenience of university members of the body. Mr. Ford, in moving for the alteration, said that the later meeting would be found better for the majority of members. as it did not break into the middle of the afternoon. The report of the director, Mr. Gilbert Archey, showed that the attendance during the past month was 13,500, making a total for the year of 197,427 visitors. The installation of fire alarms had been completed. Mr. Fisher, who joined the staff on August 1, and the recorder, Mr. Leece, have nearly completed the arrangement of the study collection of Maori articles, and have progressed with the Polynesian collections. One sea lion has been mounted, and another is partly prepared. FIFTV ACCESSIONS Since last council meeting, 50 accessions had been made, making a total of 311 for the year. Many Maori implements were included. A large hide shield taken in the Indian Mutiny had been presented by Mr. H. C. F. Clark, and Miss F. Stradwick, of Callen, Banffshire, had sent from Scotland a beautiful hand-worked shawl which had been worn by her great-grand-mother. The president mentioned, the death of Mr. A. Philpott, and the following resolution was passed—“ That the council expresse its deep regret at the death of Mr. Alfred Philpott, F.N.Z., Inst., and place on record its appreciation of his important contributions to entomological research, gratefully acknowledging his valuable services to the museum as honorary entomologist.”
