CAUGHT ON STEAMER
MAN FORCED TO PAY HOSPITAL FEES TRACED TO WELLINGTON How a man, who owed the Auckland Hospital Board a large sum in fees, was relentlessly pursued, and actually taken off the boat in Wellington, on which he had booked his passage to England, was revealed in the report of the Fees Committee to the board yesterday. The report stated: “A man, who met with an accident and received £1,200 compensation, was found to have been bragging that he would not pay the hospital any portion of the £BS which was incurred in treating him. Steps to compel him to pay, particularly as lie had taken out a passage for England, and was taking his money with him. When he found that wo were determined to make him pay, he quietly slipped away, and was eventually arrested as he was stepping aboard the boat in Wellington. Finding that he was cornered and had no means of escape, he paid over in cash the amount due to the board, plus experfses incurred.”
