WATER BOARD BILL
OPPOSITION FROM ROSKILL MEETING OF BOARD The question of Mount Roskills attitude toward the Auckland Provincial Water Board Bill, now before the House, came up for discussion at the Road Board's meeting last evening. The pro. tern, secretary to the combined local bodies promoting the Bill wrote requesting the board to ask its Parliamentary representative to support the measure, especially as the Auckland City Council was said to be opposing it. Air. G. E. Tansley strongly opposed the Bill on the grounds that the proposed water supply would have to bo received at Greenwood's Corner, which meant that the Road Board would be compelled to construct a reservoir on One Tree Hill, containing but two days' supply. It would also be necessary to purchase and lay 8-inch water-mains before the water could be delivered to ratepayers. The scheme, he said, would entail on the board an expenditure of thousands of pounds, and, seeing that they were already getting satisfactory results from the City's supply, he strongly urged the board to act cautiously and not commit itself. In reply to a question, the clerk, Mr. J. Warren, announced that the Alount Roskill district had been included in the Bill -without the board's consem. Air. S. I. Goodall was of opinion that the board should clearly indicate that it had no intention of making itself » party to the Bill and. on his motion, it was decided to request the sponsors to withdraw Alount Roskill’s name from the measure and exclude the Alount Roskill district from its provisions. Alessrs. W. J. Jordan and G. C. Alunn«. members for the district, are to be requested to oppose the Bill in the House. The board’s engineer. Air. John Dawson. reported that he was pushing alrfad with the preparation of Three Kings Road for the tramway extension, by making surveys for the necessary sewerage and concreting the surface. The plans and specifications for the latter, he said, were prepared and tenders would close on Tuesday. September 2. He hoped to make a start with the concrete paving during September, and arrangements had been made with the Transport Board's engineer for commencing the work of laying the tram tracks after the Christmas holidays. by which time the concrete work would be completed. TRAM EXTENSION The chairman, Air. E. F. Jones, drew attention to the action of residents in the vicinity of Vincent Road in opposing the extension of the Sandringham tramline unless it were taken to Vincent Road. He pointed out that in the loan proposals placed before the ratepayers by the Transport Board assurance was given that the terminus of the Sandringham line would be at the intersection of Alount Albert Road, and on Air. Jones's motion, it was agreed to request the Transport Board to carry out its original programme. As the result of a discussion on an amendment to the Auckland Transport Board Act, 1928, in the direction of electing members of the board by the whole district. Air. S. I. Goodall was appointed to attend the conference at Newmarket tomorrow with instructions to support the proposal. It was decided to take no action in connection with the movement promoted by the Auckland City Council for the establishment of a commercial airport. The board’s solicitors were instructed to take legal proceedings for :he recovery of all overdue rates. A hearty welcome was accorded Af r. George Tansley, an old member and ex-chairman of the board, on his recovery from a long illness and the resumption of his seat at the board table.
