SCHOOL CONCERT

CHILDREN’S CLEVER WORK

The star item of the concert given by the pupils of the Good Shepherd Convent School, in St. Benedict’s Hall last evening, was an action song entitled “Grandmothers,” given by 20 little tots, complete with “granny” clothes, bonnets, sticks and hobble. The concert was a great success.

When the “grandmothers” filed on to the stage there started a gale of laughter, which they had to fight practically throughout their song. Their singing was effective, however, and great credit is due to the instruction given by the Sisters of St. Joseph. The combined singing of both boys and girls showed careful and patient practice. A threepart presentation of “Killarney” by the senior girls was most effective. In pianoforte numbers the children showed unusual talent. Four girls whose feet just reached the floor when they were on the stool, played “La Femme Nouvelle” together on two pianos. Aliss Murphy, L.T.C.L., and Miss McLeod, two senior pupils, played “Espana” as a duet, and five boys also combined cleverly on the pianos. “Hungarian Banc-e” was played by six of the girls.

“An Old World Picture” was strikingly performed in dialogue and dance by little Aliss B. Franchi, K. Roberts, and V. Anstice. This dainty tableau with old-world setting was like a professional turn in miniature. Other elocutionary numbers were given by Alisses Zoe Lovell, Duncan, Allpress and Butler. A cleverly-done didactic cantata, “Flowery Garlands,” by “the company,” concluded the programme. Airs. Franchi. L.T.C.L., ’ was accompanist.

The concert was a worthy contribution to Music Week, ami one of which the Sisters may be justly proud.
