CLOSED BRANCH LINES
MIGHT BE RE-OPENED, SAYS MINISTER ONUS ON SETTLERS ■ Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. If settlers in the different districts in which branch lines have been closed will form themselves into vigilance committees, and make an effort to increase the business of the railways, the Minister, the Hon. W. A. Veitch, is prepared to consider the reopening of the lines. This promise was given a deputation today from the Ashburton district, which pointed out that many farmers would suffer through the closing of the fpur miles of railway from Mount Somers to Springburn. Tho deputation pointed out that the country served required heavy topdressing. and the farmers relied on the railways for the carriage of fertilisers. Mr. Veitch agreed that topdressing was a great factor in increasing the production of a farm, but pointed out that the Joss on the line was large. He knew tho closing of the line was a serious thing for farmers, but the financial position of the railways was also a serious tiling for the Government.
