ELLERSLIE TRAINING MANY SLOW GALLOPS PRACTICE BARRIER USED With the approach of the Pakuranga TTunt Club's meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday, all tracks now present a much busier appearance than has been the case .since the Northern gathering two months ago. Weather conditions ruling for this morning’s work were entirely saisfactory, while underfoot the turf was inclined to cut up a bit, thus making for slow times. The course proper, with the flags out 40 feet, was principally used, while as an additional attraction the two-year-olds were indulged in barrier practice from the new mile post. A double winner at Ellerslie recently, Gold Money, made her way round to the six furlongs to come home comfortably in 1.25, moving very freely and under restraint at the finish. The three-year-old Lady Court made friends for Saturday’s race by defeating Foot Rule over five furlongs in 1.8 2-5. She did it nicely and is improving in condition with every gallop. Lady Court was a winner at the autumn meeting of the Avondale Jockey Club, but it is not in her favour that she is a bit on the small side. Odin was restricted to half a mile at three-quarter pace. Tie looks better now than at any previous stage of liis career, and is sure to be one of the prime fancies for the Pakuranga Hunt Cup on Saturday, especially as he took third honours in the Great Northern Steeplechase recently. On the outside of Llanore, Sir Archie had to be kept up to his work to keep on terms with his companion over five furlongs, done in 1.11 1-5. Llanore has not raced since she entered J. Chisholm's stable in June, but she had creditable efforts prior to coming North. Frothblower beat Kawainga and Patutahi when they disposed of five furlongs in 1.11 1-5. while for a furlong farther Great Emblem did better than Bizarro in 1.29. There was no pace on, however.
Operatic ran home from the five furlongs, but was not out for time. Maori Boy had Hannibal’s assistance in an effort once round, the pair remaining together to record 2.ls—evidence tliat they were not required to do anything of exacting nature. For tlie last seven the watch showed 1.40. Hannibal is a light-weight whose chance in the Jellicoe Handicap is assessed highly, while the racing he has had during the winter will materially assist. Maori Boy, too, bears a bright and healthy appearance, obviously having done well since the Trentham fixture. Prince Amans bad an advantage over General Lu in a six furlongs’ bout in 1.2 S 4-5, while Principal beat Neil over a similar journey, the last five taking 1.10. Yesterday’s Arrivals To Aroha trainer P. A. Swyney arrived at Ellerslie yesterday with Yolimond and Honiton. The former is very well at present, and pleased more than Honiton from the half-mile in 54 4-5. Both came round the turn very wide, with Volimond on the inside berth, holding her companion to the post. Bennie was partnered by Twinkler in a journey over a round, and while Quincoma joined in at the six, Twinkler was eased over flie last four furlongs. Bennie’s time for the whole journey was 2.14, with Quincoma appearing the better of the two at the end. Bennie was accorded a race at the TVaipa meeting, but he may have more racing before striking form. Mon Star ran five furlongs in 1.13, being kicked right out at the finish. After schooling. Marble Mount, accompanied Catulu.s over six furlongs, but neither was timed. Schooling bouts were conspicuous by their absence, only Frevja (J. Burgess) and Foxhound (A. Gilmer) using the fences on the flat. Both acquitted themselves nicely, Freyja spoiling her display by a poor jump at the double. Marble Mount (J. Preston) took two hurdles in easy style, fencing a trifle big. Several horses, principally two-year-olds, were associated in barrier practice from the mile post. Included in the bunch was Sub-Editor, Informant, Hawthorne, United, Milvane, Lost Comet, Darma, Royal Gallant and Herbie. The youngsters did not display unusual nervousness at the tapes and moved away smoothly over three furlongs in 40 3-5. E. A. Keesing’s rides on Saturday are True Blood and Unoco, while R. McTavish will be associated with Standfast.
