TANK WARFARE
NANKING HAS VICTORY ON CHINA FRONT OPTIMISTIC FORECAST SHANGHAI, Monday. The Shansi forces have evacuated the province of Shantung as a result of the fall of Tsinan. The Nanking (Nationalist) Government consequently claims that the Northerners are leaving Lanfeng (200 miles southwest of Tsinan), which they have held through the whole campaign, and that they intend to retire along the Lunghai front. If this be true it is expected that the Northerners will yield Haifeng and Chanchow and make a stand farther south. The President, Chiang Kai-shek, has strongly reinforced the Southern troops, the removal of whom led to the recent Communist risings in the provinces of Kiangsi and Hunan. With 12 tanks purchased in Britain, Chang undoubtedly is in a superior position to that of the Kuominchun army, which has been badly depleted of effectives and material. It is generally believed. however, that the Nanking Government is too optimistic and that there is much to do before the Northerners accept its terms.
