EXCHANGING STUDENTS
SCHEME ON CONTINENT GERMAN PROPOSAL HEARD versity may be trained shortly in German university. At a meeting of the council of the Auckland University College yesterday a letter was received from the regis - trar of the New Zealand University enclosing it suggestion from Dr. K. Mehnhert, of Beilin, to this effect. It is the practice df the German universities to exchange annually with students from the Argentine. Canada, England, Finland. France. Hungary, Ireland. Iceland. Italy and the United istates, and it is hoped that New Zea - land will be able to make similar arrangements. Dr. Mehnhert stated that exchanges were made through an academic association, which was personally in charge of the student from his arrival to begin the academic year on November 1 until the period ended on July 31. The university supplied him with board find lodgings and provided free tuition. The graduat*would be expected to arrange his own travelling. “Much too little is known in Continental universities about New Zealand and the younger generation particularly is very anxious to learn morA about the country in order to understand better the people and ideas ' concluded the letter. The chairman of the College Council Sir George Fowlds, considered that little could be done at present but that some arrangements should be made as soon as possible. There was no college hostel in Auckland and board would have to be paid. It was pointed out bv a member that the' position is the same in Germany, where there arr no university hostels whatever. exchange would cost about .£2OO a year, at least £6O to £7O being required for board here. The scheme will receive further consideration.
