TALISMAN SAILS
DEPARTURE FOR SOUTH The scow Talisman, well known on the Auckland waterfront, sailed yesterday afternoon for Nelson to inaugurate a cargo service between Golden Bay and v Wellington. The vessel, previously owned and operated as a coastal trader by James Smith and Co., of Auckland, was recently taken over by the Golden Bay Shipping Co., Ltd., which firm, it is understood, was formed to purchase her and place her on this new run. Since she was sold by James Smith and .Co. the Talisman has undergone an extensive overhaul at Auckland and has been fitted with auxiliary Diesel engines.
She is commanded by Captain A. J. Henry. The Talisman was engaged in coastal transport to east coast and northern ports for many years. Her last trip was to Whangarei, and since August 30 last year* she has laid up at the Nelson Street Wharf, awaiting a purchaser. She was built at Whangaroa in 1897, and is of 70 tons net register. 94ft in length and 24ft wide. She is wooden-built and is good for many years’ service yet, in spite of her age.
