NICHOLSON’S WIN
MITCHELSON TROPHY FOR CROSS-COUNTRY RUN COOPER MAKES GOOD PACE For the second time in three starts! this season, the veteran distance j runner, Jack Nicholson, won the crosscountry event held by the Auckland i Atheltic Association on Saturday ■ after noon. The contest, held on the j Ellerslie Racecourse, was for the Sir i Edwin Mitchelson Cup. Norman Cooper ran a great race for third place i and fastest time. The distance was five miles, and was over the steeplechase course. The \ ground was in good order, and the j finish was a keen one. The limit j man, Alf. Clark, led lor over three laps, but was passed, when descending the hill for the last time, by Nicholson and Montgomery. Nicholson was going freshly but could not risk short sprint, so he passed Montgomery as they entered the straight, and the two put in a hard burst for j supremacy over the last 300 yards. The race was won by a margin of onli* . five yards. SECOND WIN ON COURSE This is the second occasion on which Nicholson lias won on the Ellerslie course. In his only other ; start there, in £921, he won a three! and a-half mile event. He lias done ! very little running during the last j two years, but has kept fit. and finished on Saturday full of go. His race was i well-judged. Cooper’s run was most meritorious, j From the back mark, lie passed all except two men out of 19 starters, and finished a little more than 100 yards behind the winner. His pace was the same typical stride and steadiness throughout. TRIED HARD Clark tried hard, and the rest made no impression on him for the first two laps, but he began to tire shortly afterward. He hung on gamely, and was passed when only 500 yards from the tape. Only four men beat him in, thankful, no doubt, for such a reliable pacemaker. L. C. Barker was in good form, and had a good reserve for the last time round. He finished a little ahead of Clark and Thomas. The latter man and the youngster, Hill, were together 400 yards behind the leader with two laps to go. The two crept up steadily, and Thomas beat Hill by only a few : yards. Brown appeared to be not in • the best form of this season. J. Dowle, who made the trophy for the j race, was three places behind Brown. : R. L. Stewart won both the W. C. Ring handicap sprint and the Sir • James Coates shot-putting events. \ These events were won by the respec- » tive donors of the trophies at a meet- ! ing 53 years ago. The trophies were presented in the i
