RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH
SOUTHLAND KEEPS TROPHY HAWKE’S BAY’S CHALLENGE Press Association INVERCARGILL, Saturday. The third challenge match for the Ranfurly Shield between Southland and Hawke’s Bay was played at Rugby Park today, and resulted in a win for the holders by 9 points to 6. The playing conditions were almost perfect, there being no sun or wind. The attendance was estimated at 7,000. The only sensation was when Wanoa was ordered off. The team fielded by the visitors was its best combination. Hawke’s Bay had a lead of 6 points to 0 at half-time and was unlucky in not making it larger. Southland won with three penalty goals to a try and a penalty goal. It could not cross the visitors’ line, but its back play was superior.
Hawke’s Bay kept play as tight as possible and tried little open work. Although an even game it nearly went to Hawke’s Bay, which put in the most determined bid yet made for the shield. Tho match was spectacular, with interest always tense. The kicking of Hawke’s Bay constantly changed defence into attack. There were several stoppages for injuries, and Gillespie, Hawke’s Bay, had to be carried off.
After Wanoa was ordered off the advantage of play swung in Southland’s direction, and many exciting movements were witnessed. To much cannot be said for the defence of Hawke’s Bay, which time after time averted what looked like certain tries. C. Brownlie and Grenside impressed in a side that played as a team. Hazlett and Bell headed many movements for Southland. An advantage in weight frequently gave Hawke’s Bay predominance in line-outs and scrums. For Southland Diask kicked three penalty goals and C. Brownlie scored a try, and Grenside kicked a penalty goal for Hawke’s Bay.
