JOCKEY INJURED
H. DULIEU’S ILL-LUCK AT RICCARTON MISSES WINNING RIDE Auckland hurdle jockey, H. Dulieu, received a nasty smash oft' Mangani at Riccarton on Saturday, necessitating- his removal to hospital, where he was treated as an out-patient. Later, however, ho was readmitted owning to his injuries proving more serious than anticipated. Dulieu’s association with the Waikato hurdler met with ill-luck on each occasion at the meeting, for the horse got no farther than the second fence in the National Hurdles before lie lost all interest in the race. Luckily Dulieu got off unscathed; but Saturday’s Sydenham Hurdles was a black affair for him. Trouble came at the outset of the race. A Hard Puller Mangani was pulling so hard that his rider let him go with Pangolin and the initial fence saw him blunder badly. In fact, it was with only extreme cleverness he recovered. The hoodoo was over this obstacle as concerned Mangani, for it was here, at the bottom of the straight, that he crashed heavily, pinning his jockey down. Dulieu was immediately sent to hospital, where a broken * collarbone
received treatment. However, later, at tli© course, it was deemed necessary he return to the institution. In addition to the broken collarbone Dulieu has slight internal injuries, and his discharge is not expected till early this week. W. ,T. Bowden profited by Dulieu’s bad luck, for it enabled him to secure a victory in the Lincoln Steeplechase on the chance mount, Aurora Borealis. Such is the luck of the racing game.
