PERSONAL. —Captain J. L. Brisco has been appointed to the Kaponga and Captain W. Whitefield has bejn appointed to the Kiwitea. Mr. D. M. Keith, chief officer of the Aorangi, is being granted holidays at Sydney, Mr. E. M. Anderson joining the vessel as actign-chief officer. Mr. C. H. Adams has joined the Omana as chief officer. Mr. W. J. Freeman has relieved Mr. B. F. Fisher, chief officer of the Waipahu for holidays. Mr. D. Munro is now second officer of the Gabriella. Mr. H. J. M. Kemp has joined the Otokia as third officer, relieving Mr. R. D. Stewart for holidays. Mr. H. E. Petre is now third officer of the Waipahi, having relieved Mr. J. E. Semmens for instructions. Mr. J. Forbes recently joined the Tofua as third officer, Mr. D. J. Rutter being granted holidays. Mr. G. H. Edwards is joining the komata as third officer, relieving Mr. C. A. Spence for orders. Mr. A. Jackson has joined the Titoki as first mate, relieving Mr. A. G. Hardy, who has come ashore on sick leave. THE OMANA. —The Union Company advises that th- Omana left Timaru on Wednesday for fevdney and Newcastle to load for Auckland. THE GABRIELLA. —'the Union Company advises that the Gabriella is to clear Sydney on August. 23 for Wellington, New Plymouth and Wanganui. KAWATIRI AND KATOA. —The kawatiri and Katoa reached Wellington from Newcastle yesterday. The Katoa is to unload all her coal cargo at Wellington and then lay up, and the Kawatiri will unload at Wellington and Napier. ULIMAROA LEAVES SYDNEY. —The Huddart-Parker steamer Ulimaroa left Sydney for Auckland at one o’clock yesterday afternoon with passengers, mail and cargo. She is due on Tuesday morning. MAILS FOR NEW ZEALAND.—The Chief Postmaster advises that the s.s. Ulimaroa left Sydney for Auckland at noon yesterday with 101 bags of Australian and Eastern mail for Auckland. She is due to arrive on Tuesday. LIMERICK ARRIVES. —To complete her carg-o for Loudon, via Panama, the motor-ship Limerick, owned by the Union Company but loading under the auspices of the New Zealand Shipping Company, arrived in port last evening from Gisborne. This morning *lsll© berthed at Queen’s Wharf to load and she is to sail finally from here on Wednesday next. THE WAIHEMO.— The Union Company’s steamer Waihemo has recommissioned and was to sail at noon today for Vancouver direct. She will load on the Pacific Coast for New Zealand. Captain J. M. Morgan is in command of the vessel and the following are the officers: Chief, Mr. F. Mabb; second, Mr. H. Ruegg; third, Mr. E. V. Condon. ARGYLLSHIRE DELAYED.— The Federal Company advises that the Argyllshire will now leave Wellington tomorrow morning for Napier, Gisborne, Tokomaru Bay and Auckland to complete loading. She is now to clear Auckland on August 27 for London, Avonmouth, Liverpool? Manchester and Glasgow, via the Panama Canal. THE HAURAKI.— The Union Company advises that the motor ship Hauraki was to leave Adelaide yesterday for Vancouver, via Fanning Island. She is to load at Pacific Coast ports during September for Papeete. Auckland, Wellington, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney, and is due at Auckland on October 23. R.M.M.S. AORANGI AT SYDNEY.— The Royal Mail liner Aorangi reached Sydney from Auckland at seven o’clock yesterday morning. The vessel is to leave Sydney next Thursday and Auckland the following Tuesday on her return voyage to Suva, Honolulu and Vancouver. THE HERTFORD. —The Federal Line steamer Hertford is scheduled to clear Liverpool today with cargo from West Coast ports of Great Britain for dis-chax-ge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers and New Plymouth. She is due at Auckland on September 23. The New Zealand Shipping Company is the local agent. T he RUAHINE.— The New Zealand Shipping Cmpany’s liner Ruahine left London on Thursday and was to clear Southampton yesterday for K’ew Zealand The vessel is due at Wellington on September 22 to ‘land passengers and mail. Afterward she will unload her general merchandise cargo at Port Chalmers, Lyttelton and Timaru. THE MAUNGANUI. —The Union Conipany s intercolonial passenger steamer Maunganui left Wellington yesterdav afternoon and will arrive at Sydney oh .Tuesday. The vessel is to leave Svdney next Friday for Wellington and Auckland. She is due back at Wellington on August and at Auckland on August 29. From Auckland she will be dispatched for Sydney direct. CANADIAN CRUISER SAILED.— The Canadian National steamer Canadian sai l ec L for Wellington, Lyttelton, liinaru and Dunedin at midday vesterday to complete unloading cargo from Montreal and Sydney, Cape Breton. She is scheduled to clear Auckland finally on September 1 for New York, Boston ai*d Montreal. r, VIADUCT LIGHTS.— A “Gazette” notice advises that the opening between the eastern and western portions of the Viaduct at Freeman’s Bay will be marked as tollows:—On the north end of the training pier, one fixed white light; on the "“•■‘h-west corner of the eastern portion of the viaduct, at a height of 15ft, horizontally placed 4ft apart two fixed red lights; on the north-east coiner of the western portion of the viaduct, at a height Of loft, horizontally placed Ift apart, two fixed lights.

THE MIDDLESEX. —The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Fed- 1 era! steamer Middlesex, now at Queen’s I Wharf putting out the local part of her ! cargo of general merchandise from West \ Coast United Kingdom ports, is to sail ' on Thursday next for Wellington. Lyt- ! telton and Dunedin to complete discharge. THE PORT ALMA. —The Commonwealth and Dominion Line vessel Port Alma, after having discharged 3,750 tons of general merchandise from London at this port, as well as a quantity of explosives at the Motuihi powder anchorage, was scheduled to sail at 11 o’clock this morning for Wellington and Napier to complete unloading. NIAGARA AT VANCOUVER. —Cabled advice received by the Union Company reports the arrival at Vancouver of the Royal Mail liner Niagara from Sydney, via way ports, at 7 a.m. yesterday. Tie vessel is to leave Vancouver on Wednesday next for Sydney, via Victoria, Honolulu, Suva and Auckland. She is due at Auckland on September 8. RAISDALE REPORTS.— A wireless message received by Messrs. Russell and Somers from the British steamer Raisdale states that she expects to arrive in the stream here from Bunbury at 10 o’clock on Monday morning. The vessel is laden with hardwood, the local consignment of which she will unload at King’s Wharf and later sails for Wellington. Lyttelton and Dunedin to put out the remainder. NEW ZEALAND DUE TOMORROW.— The Norwegian motor-tanker New Zealand is due at this port tomorrow* from Sydney to complete discharge of her cargo of bulk oil from Los Angeles into the Texas Oil Company’s tanks at Freeman’s Bay. for which purpose she will berth at Western 'Wharf. She will probably sail p.m. on Monday for Los Angeles to load another cargo for Australian ports and Wellington. A. GFrankham, Ltd., is the agent. ROTORUA FOR HOME. —The New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Rotorua, which was timed to clear Wellington at 1 p.m. today for Southampton and London, via the Panama Canal, was to take the following passengers:—First saloon: Mrs. V. Clay. Mr. and Mrs. W. IT. E. Flint, Miss E. A. Flint, Mr. G. W. Flint. Mr. R. J. Harris, Miss O. C. Kettle, Mr. and Mrs. Martini, Mr. P. Smiles, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Van Ossaerlaer. Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Webb, Miss J. S. Webb, Master N. K. Webb; and 30 third class. RUAHINE CLEARS SOUTHAMPTON. —Cabled news received bv the New Zealand Shipping Company states that its liner Ruahine, after having loaded general merchiindise at London for New Zealand, sailed for Southampton to embark passengers and take on mails, and cleared that port yesterday for Wellington. She will land only her passengers and mails at the capital (where she is due on September 22) and will later proceed to Port Chalmers, Lyttelton and Timaru to unload her cargo. CORINTHIC’S ALTERED ITINERARY —Advice received from A. S. Paterson and Company, Ltd., states that the White Star liner Corinthic will omit both Gisborne and Waikokopu from her loading ports. The vessel is now at Wellington. and is to leave there on Mondav for Napier and Auckland, to complete her cargo for London. She is scheduled to arrive here on August 23 and to clear this port finally with passengers and mails for Southampton and London, via the Panama Canal, at 3 p.m. on August NEW WAREHOUSE.—A warehouse, owned by the Societa Anonima Docks Meridionali, at Naples, was recentlv completed, and vessels are now able to discharge alongside. The warehouse has an area of about 12,000 square metres, and there are 10 electric cranes, capable of lifting up t«> 1} tons of cargo each These cranes can lower cargo, either into a vessel’s hold or discharge it straight into the warehouse or on to railway trucks. The wharf is 350 metres loner, and the draught alongside is about 25 to 30ft. At present the warehouse is not a bonded store, but it is expected that it will become so shortly. NAVIGATION WARNING. —The Marine Department advises that the following smgle-fiag signals will be made from the excavator mast at the eastern side of the inner harbour at Napier:— ,(1) Pennant “C”—Channel clear for navigation. (2) Burgee “B”—Channel obstructed. v essels must not enter or leave unless pennant “C** is shown; and vessels entering unnoticed must make a sound signal. All vessels must keep to the centre of the channel; and if it is found necessary to define the navigable portion °£ channel, this will be done b?.' means of buoys, red on the right-hand side whoa entering, and black on the left.
