CLEARING THE BAR
A NEW METHOD Judging from a remarkable incident which occurred in one of the liquor bars at the Carlton football ground, Melbourne, recently, the use of noxious gas is to play a part in the rivalry between hotelkeepers. The bar was crowded during the half-time interval of the Carlton-Gee-long match when a nauseating gas was released in such quantities as to clear it of its occupants. The licensee said he believed it was done to injure his business. Seven of the ten barmen employed there were returned soldiers, all of whom were affected by the fumes. One of them, shortly before the occurrence, noticed three men with a bottle, the contents of which was poured on the ground. The nature of the liquid or gas is not known.
