CANADIAN PREFERENCE
WITHDRAWAL POSSIBLE, SAYS PRIME MINISTER
MOTOR-CAR IMPORTS Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. An intimation that the Government may be forced to consider the withdrawal of-the application of the British preferential tariff to motor-cars imported from Canada was given by Qu? Prime Minister this morning. Mr. Forbes said New Zealand imported heavily from Canada and unless that country was prepared to purchase our butter and enable us to pay for the goods we bought an extremely difficult position was likely to arise. On the way Home he would discuss with the Canadian authorities the reciprocal trade arrangement between New Zealand and Canada. A close inquiry is also to be made by the Government into the question of the percentage of British labour and materials used in the manufacture of articles imported under British preferential tariff, the Prime Minister added. With regard to the preference that we now give to Canada it is the intention of the Government to find out what proportion of the goods we import from that country is really Canadian and how much is American. That is a matter that will be looked into closely, particularly as it applies to motor-cars.
