DID NOT PAY TAXI
WHAKATANE MAN’S LONG RIDE “MUST PAY,” SAYS S.M. Harry Farmer took a bottle of whisky as a companion when he went on a taxi jaunt to Mauku on August 10. Unfortunately for him he could not pay the taxi-driver. Farmer was charged at the Police Court today with incurring a debt of £3 15s with William Regina-d Brough, thereby obtaining credit by fraud. He was represented by Mr. Aekins. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that Farmer was before the Court on August 13, and was remanded for sentence after pleading guilty “He apparently got Brought to drive him to Mauku,” said Mr. Kelly. “On the way out the taxi-driver noticed that accused had a bottle of whisky with him and was drunk He could not pay his fare, and he was charged with drunkenness at Pukekohe.” Mr. Aekins admitted that his client was drunk, but said he bad hired the taxi to go to Mauku, where he had a friend who, he thought, would lend him some money. CHANGED CIRCUMSTANCES “Unfortunately, he found his friend's financial position had changed a good dteal and he could not get the money," said Mr. Aekins. “He asked to be driven back to Auckland, where he could get it. but the taxi-man drove him to the Pukekohe Police Station. Accused lives at Whakatane and can pay the fare. He has been in custodv for a week. There is nothing previ ously known against him.” In view of counsel's statement <>£ the position, Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M.. convicted Farmer and ordered him to come up for sentence within six months if called upon. He was ordered to pay the fare.
