OPEN MARKETS

Sir, — _ .. I read with much interest a letter upon this subject in your issue of the 6th inst. over the signature of Mrs. Ruby E. Watson. The remarks concerning tho markets in St. Heliers, Jersey, made by that lady are much to the point. Taking the population of the island into account —from memory. under 60,000 —its system of markets for fruit, flowers, vegetables, fish and meat, all under separate - roofs, constructed of granite and marble, gives every advantage possible to seller and buyer. The spaces are rented from the city council, known as the “States.” It would appear that in the world of economics, this race of Norman people are the only ones who have successfully solved the problem of constructing public works by the issue of paper, upon the security only of the works constructed. C. E. MANGER.
