GAY MUSICAL ROMANCE
PLAZA’S PROGRAMME i Fox Movietone has scored another tremendous hit. "The Golden Calf,” described as a comedy with music, made an auspici- 1 ous bow at the Plaza Theatre last night to an audience which voted It one of the greatest productions of the year. This picture, with an amusing story of Greenwich village and its artists as a background, has everything that a musical comedy should have. Beauty, talent, youth, personality, tuneful music, comedy of a high order, and dancing unequalled before on stage or screen, are the elements which make this a production no one who enjoys pictures should miss. Sue Carol, in the best role of her career, establishes herself as a real actress, as well as a comedienne of unusual talent, and a singer of more than ordinary ability. Jack Mulhall, as the artist-hero, is eminently satisfactory in his light role, and also reveals a charming voice in a song number with Miss Carol. El Brendel, cast in a typical Swedish role, contributes liberally of his fund of comedy, and again stamps himself as the foremost character comedian of the audible screen. His song number, "A Picture No Artist Can Paint.” alone is worth the price of admission. Marjorie White, sensational find of ‘Sunny Side Up,” again proves she is headed for early stardom by her outstanding performance as Sue’s girl friend. She is a rare comedienne, with a dynamic personality that marks her as a real actress.
A full programme of shorter talk!' featurettes* completed an evening o_ rare entertainment. The remainder of the programme at the Plaza includes “Hide Out.” the ; story of a youth who preferred to hide at college rather than serve a term of , imprisonment. James Murray and Kathryn Crawford are the stars. There are also some interesting views of the fourth Rugby Test match.
