POPULAR WHAKATANE MAN From Our Otcn Correspondent WHAKATANE, Thursday. A public farewell was tendered to Mr. G. S. Bullen last evening prior to hia departure for Auckland. The Mayor, Mr. W. Sullivan, who presided over a large attendance, referred to the public services rendered by Mr. Bullen over a period of eight years. As chairman of the Whakatane School Committee Mr. Bullen had done much to further the educational needs of the whole district. He had also been an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Domain Board, Beautifying Society and Library Committee. Mr. Walter Reid, county chairman, said Mr. Bullen had taken a keen interest not only in the advancement of the town, but also in the advancement of the dairying industry of the great Rangitaiki Plains and the Opouriao and Waimana Valleys. Other members of local bodies also paid tributes to the active part Mr. Bullen had taken to promote the interests of the Whakatane district. On behalf of the people of the town and district the Mayor presented Mr. Bullen with a leather suitcase for himself and a crystal cut-glass vase for Mrs. Bullen. Earlier fn the day members of the School Committee and the teaching staff presented Mr. Bullen with a travelling clock. Presentations were also made to Mr. and Mrs. Bullen by the Anglican parishioners of the district.
WEST END, PONSONBY Two first-class talkies are being shown on the same .programme at the West End Theatre, Ponsonby Road. They are “Dangerous Paradise,” a thrilling tale of adventure in the South Seas, based on one of Joseph Conrad’s novels, and starring Nancy Carroll and Richard Arlen: and the second attraction, “The Ship from Shanghai,” a mystery thriller of a mad steward. Louis Wolheim, Leila Hyams and Conrad Nagel are the stars.
