PHEASANTS LOST
“GROUND VERMIN” PESTS ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY The depredations of stoats and weasels made the liberation of pheasants impossible in several districts, according to a claim made by a member at last evening’s meeting of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. A farmer in the Raglan district had eyen had several lambs killed by stoats. To these pests also, to g. large extent, could be attributed the extermination of the kiwi.
Sub-societies will be asked to submit reports on the question before the Government is approached for permission to destroy “ground vermin” in districts which are free from rabbits. The present system of closing small areas after pheasants had been liberated is to be abandoned. In future whole districts will be closed. A total of 400,000 trout ova and 200,000 fry are to be liberated during the year. Each sub-society is to be informed as to its allocation, and is to be asked for suggestions concerning the stocking of streams. The Fish Research Society requested the Acclimatisation Society’s co-operation in a plan to secure details of the temperatures of the streams in the Dominion. Readings will be taken daily for .a year in two streams in the society’s area. A' resolution of appreciation for the services of Air. W. G. Wohlmann, Commissioner of Police, in the interests of acclimatisation, was passed.
