LEAGUE OF PENWOMEN
ORIGINAL ENTERTAINMENT The members of the dramatic section of the League of New Zealand Penwomen were present at an unusual and interesting meeting, held in the club rooms, Short’s Buildings, Queen Street, on Tuesday evening. The convener. Airs. Arthur Griffiths, arranged an excellent programme, the most notable portion of which was a gramophone recital of recordings of the voices of famous actors. The records were generously lent by Airs. Arthur Griffiths, they having been specially imported for her from England. Some of the records which the members were fortunate enough to have the privilege of hearing were: John Barrymore’s recital of “Gloucester’s Soliloquy,” and also Hamlet’s famous Soliloquy, two performances in French by the great Sarah Bernhardt, “La Samaritaine” and “Phedre,” Sir M. Beerbohm Tree’s recital of “Svengali Mesmerises Trilby,” and a magnificent interpretation of the merev speech from “The Merchant of Venice/* by Ellen Terry. The bed-time story of Red Riding Hood, told by Wish Wynne, the famous English comedian, in his inimitablo style, completed a list of unique and valuable records. A vote of thanks was expressed to Mrs. Arthur Griffiths, and also to Messrs. Lewis Eady, Ltd., who very kindly supplied the gramophone used. Two original and clever stories, entitled “Fate and Molly” and the “Remittance Man,” were told by Aliss Violet Spurling and Miss Gwynne Peacock, respectively. A humorous, historical sketch by Alaurice Baring, entitled “Catherine Parr,” was cleverly given by Airs. Arthur Griffiths, Mrs. R. E. N. Alatthcws, and Aliss Doris Alesser. Among those present were:—Airs. 1. Cluett (president),. Dr. M. Staley, Mrs. Arthur Griffiths, Airs. Hutchinson, Airs. King, Airs. Ponder, Airs. Spinley. Airs. AlcKinney, Airs. R. E. N.
