FIRE AT CAMBRIDGE
OUTBREAK DAMAGES SHOPS BRIGADE CALLED FROM HALL Special to THE SUN CAMBRIDGE, Thursday. A serious outbreak of fire occurred in a two-storeyed wooden block of buildings in Victoria Street, which is in the centre of the business area of the town. The fire broke out in the top storey, occupied by A. L. McCullagh, photographer. The fire brigade was holding its annual ball at the time but promptly answered the call and, with the assistance of visiting firemen who were attending the ball, was able to confine the fire to the top storey, which was, however, badly damaged. The volume of water necessary to extinguish the outbreak, which already had a good hold when discovered, flooded the three shops below. The shops were occupied by C. E. Range, stationer and fancy goods dealer, Chris. Shotbolt, mercer, and H. P. Sharp, hairdresser and tobacconist.
Water poured through the top floor, with the result that, the stocks in the shops below were badly damaged. Mr. McCullagh and his family were out tor the evening, and as there is no fireplace in the building the occupier cannot account tor the outbreak, his premises being in good order when he left at 8 p.m. The building is owned by Mr. F. S. Veale, of Tanialiere, and is insured with the South British Company. Insurances on stock are as follow:—C. F. Lange, £9OO, in the Atlas Company: H. P. Sharpe, £.300, in the Royal Insurance Company. Mr. Shotbolt’s stocks are insured in the British Traders’ Office. Mr. McCullagh’s stock was not insured.
