FEMALE COOKS

GIRL APPRENTICES PROVIDED APPLICATION TO COURT Female apprentices are to be brought under the Bakers’ and Pastrycooks’ Award. This class of worker, which is covered mainly by the home-cookery establishment, has been the subject of much controversy between the employers and the union in recent months, but a conference held a short time ago reached agreement on the contentious points. These decisions will be sent before the Arbitration Court for ratification. The apprentice is started at 22s 6d a week and will rise in sums of os every six months until the award l-ate of £2 17s 6d for journeywomen is reached.

This is the first order of the kind to be made in New Zealand.
