GALE HITS SYDNEY
WIND GOING AT 70 M.P.H. UPROOTS TREES SUBURBS IN DARKNESS Reed. 10.35 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. A fierce wind-storm, the worst experienced for years, struck Sydney last evening and caused widespread damage to property. % The suburbs were plunged into darkness, trees were uprooted, and houses unroofed, while harbour anchorages were dislodged at South Head. The wind is calculated to have reached a velocity of 70 miles an hour. The gale, however, lasted less than an hour.
