“UNDER THE INFLUENCE”
WOMAN CHARGED WITH THEFT “I can t say what I did when I was under the influence of liquor. When I take a drink I’m not responsible for my actions.” So said Martha Tainui, a domestic, aged 56, at the Police Court today, when she faced two charges of stealing vegetables of a total value of ss, and a black velvet dress valued at £l. The offences were alleged to have occurred between August 7 and 9. “It's no use me speaking or saying yes or no,” said Tainui when asked how she wished to plead. Senior-Sergeant Powell said the vegetables had been recovered. Accused had been in custody on remand for a week. "She has a list of pre■v ious convictions,” said the SeniorSergeant. “Of course,” said Hunt. “I’ve known her all my life.” Accused: It would be better for me to take out a prohibition order. The magistrate dismissed the case as the woman had been in custody for a week. She was ordered to take out a prohibition order.
