TOBACCO PRICES
CHANGES ANNOUNCED REDUCTION IN LOCAL GROWN Under the proposed alterations to the tariff the customs duty on unmanufactured tobacco has been increased to 3s. an increase of Is a pound on the old rates. It is hardly likely that there will be an increase in price to tlie public, though the margin of profit to tobacconists is now so small that several brands of made-up cigarettes are net worth handling. The increase in duty on tobacco manufactured in New Zealand was as follows in the July tariff: Cut tobacco, from Is Sd to 2s Sd a lb; fine cut, for cigarettes, Gs 3d to 10s 9d; other, Is 6d to 2s 6d; cigars and snuff, 4s to 8s; machine-made cigarettes, 5s 6d to 11s; and hand-made cigarettes, 4s to 9s 6d. The new proposal is to reduce by Is tlie first three classes of tobacco mentioned above, and to reduce the duty on the cigars and snuff to 6s 6d. The new provision announced in the House reads: Provided that where any manufactured tobacco has been manufactured wholly or partly from imported unmanufactured tobacco, the aggregate of customs duties (exclusive of primage duties or super-taxi and the excise duty payable on such manufactured tobacco, shall not exceed the following amounts a pound: Cut, 3s Sd; fine cut, 11s 9d; other, 3s 6d; cigars, 7s 6d: cigarettes, mach-ine-made, 12s; hand-made, 10s 6d.
