BUSINESS MEN CONSIDER MILITARY TRAINING REFERENDUM IN CITY Of the one-sixth of the members of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce who replied to a recent referendum regarding the continuance of compulsory 1 military training, a majority of two to one favoured the system. Members were asked to state whether they were in favour of the continuance of compulsory military training, and also whether they considered the inconvenience to employers through loss of time was more than offset by the national value of the military service. Almost without exception those who favoured the continuance of the system considered the national value to outweigh any individual inconvenience. The figures of the voting were as follow:—For continuance, without reservations, 70; against, without reservations, 36; for continuance, with reservations, 11; against, with reservations, 7. Many who did not answer the questionaire have since stated that they had not been able to make up their minds on the issue because of the conflicting interests involved, according to the secretary, Dr. E. P. Neale. A report on the, result will be .presented to the council of the chamber tomorrow, when, the question of taking further steps will be considered.
