BOWLS ON SUNDAY

' DISCUSSION AT OPOTIKI OPPONENTS WIN THE DAY From Our Own Correspondent OPOTIKI, Today. The question of Sunday play was the chief topic of discussion at the annual meeting of the Opotiki Bowling Club last evening. Mr. A. L. Arrowsmith moved that the green be open for play on Sunday afternoons, and said he could not see why anyone should object to it. Mr. J. O’Sullivan expressed the view that there was no more reason why they should not play bowls on Sunday than they should not play golf or indulge in motoring or visit the beaches. Bowls on Sunday afternoon did not interfere with their religious duties. Mr. C. Gordon said that Sunday play was inclined to offend the religious susceptibilities of people passing by. The Rev. D. Hird entered a strong protect against making Sunday afternoon a glorified Saturday afternoon. It was time that they as a community called a halt. The Sabbath represented religious ideals, and with daylight saving he saw no reason for outraging the susceptibilities of many people. Mr. Arrowsmith, in reply, said that in practically every other place in New Zealand there was Sunday play Mr. Hird had not convinced him that there was any harm in playing bowls on Sundaj*. The motion was defeated by a small majority.
