GIRL GUIDES’ CORNER

The Taupo Company, which consists of 18 Maori Guides, under Captain Pearte, was formed nearly a year ago, and the girls will hold their first birthday party on September 14. The company has been presented by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Strong with a silver cup for patrol competition, and by Mrs. Tolhurst with a book for the best all-round Guide for the year. The girls are working for their First Class badges and are displaying great interest in the coming rally, a concert being in preparation for the second week in November so . that sufficient funds may be raised to bring the whole company to Auckland on "the occasion of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell’s visit. Bird Call reports for the Birkenhead Company: “During the month of July all the patrols worked steadily. “On July 26 the Birkenhead Brownies held their first birthday party, and it was a great success. “The Provincial Commissioner, Mrs. j Coates, and the District Commissioner, ] Mrs. Usher, and also Miss Wakefield from headquarters were present, and the Patrol Leaders and the Seconds from the Guide company, as well as captain and lieutenant. The birthday cake deserves special mention. It was made and iced by Mrs. Taylor, Guide captain, and was indeed a true Brownie cake. It had two tiers and was iced all over with brown icing. The top tier held one candle and a figure of a Brownie in full uniform, as well as little objects depicting a scene from one of the favourite Brownie stories. The birthday tea was supplied by the Guide committee, and the afternoon was spent in games and competitions. “On Monday, July 28, the Guides nad a pound night, and competitions and country dancing filled in the evening. “On August 4 Captain began the meeting with inspection of the company, and later Lieutenant inspected the patrol corners. We had different games which brought in subjects needed for the Child Nurse badge, and later the committee ladies joined us in a competition. “On August 10 a church parade was held at the Anglican Church.” • * • Gold Moccasin reports for the Hikurangi Company: "The Hikurangi Girl Guides are making steady progress, and we are just about ready for our Second Class badges. We are celebrating our first birthday on August 13, and have been very busy practising for a concert to be held on that night. We are entertaining some Guides and friends from Whangarei. “The Guides went to Onerahi on Saturday to play basketball. Some of us are to be presented with service stars this week.” * * * Sea Maid, of the Russell Company, writes: “Light of us won our Domestic Service badge, and we have been promised a supper on the beach one moonlight night. “We are to have a Paddy’s market to raise funds for our clubhouse, and are working hard, for the more money we raise the better the house will be. “Two of our Guides who have been away for two or three months are coming back shortly.” Kj£9lE3ElßHßjjjj[[^E3jjEijlij|jflj[K!3
