BADMINTON TOURNEY

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS START TOMORROW FORM OF THE PLAYERS Tomorrow will see the start of the 1930 Auckland Provincial Badminton championships at the Scots Hall. This tournament is regarded, more or less, as being a “prehminarv canter” for those aspirants to national honours at the Wanganui tournament or. September 4, 5 and 6. It is becoming increasingly popular, and although entries this year are not any higher than those of last, nevertheless they are very satisfactory and the number augurs well for the future of the sport. Great credit is due to the executive of the newly-formed Auckland Badminton Association. The task which is set them is a herculean and thankless one. The programme, which has been drawn up. is a fine one and a. new feature which should please all players generally is that of having a first-year players’ singles championships for both men and women. Players will realise that it is a difficult task to get through in the three days, and in order to save confusion it is requested that ail players should toe the mark and get the first round matches over as soon as possible. By doing this the committee will be saved much trouble and the finals on Saturday will go on in an orderly fashion. The handicaps, as published in The Sun on Monday, were only provisional, and are subject to revision. Of course, it is impossible for the committee to handicap players whom it has not seen. The tournament begins each day at 11 o’clock in the morning and continues till 10 at night. St. David s Hall has been requisitioned and the junior and first-year players events will be played there. The finals will be played at the Scots Hall. Players’ passes will be obtainable at Scots Hall from the secretary. THE PLAYERS Most of Auckland's best players will be taking part in the tournament, and it will be possible to get an idea of how Aucklanders will fare in the Dominion championships. “Tom” Kelly, the holder of the title, will not be defending it, as he has gone Home. His partnership with McLean will, therefore, be broken. McLean himself will not be playing, as he is at*he present time with the British Rugby team. Both Southon and Martin will be playing. These two were winner and runner-up last year in the Dominion championships, and It is on the cards that they will fight out the final. Ivan Ellett is reported to be playing brilliantly and it is quite possible that he will figure in the final also. In the women’s singles. Miss D. Ellett, the holder of the title should, if playing up to form, succeed in retaining the trophy. There are several players, however, who will fully extend her. Miss I. Solomon should do well, and so should Miss Ramsav. Miss Capey, of the St. Aiden s Club, is a newcomer from Home, and is a find player. —T. McL.
