BUTTER FOR AMERICA
U.S. DROUGHT MAY FORCE ORDERS HERE A SUGGESTED SHIPMENT Prospects, of America being a big market for New Zealand butter within the next few weeks are considered to be bright as a result ol! the severe drought, which is holding the United States in its grip. In event of there being a demand for supplies, it is considered probable that the space reserved by the Dairy Produce Board for 20,000 boxes on the motor-ship Limerick, due at Auckland on Saturday to load for Halifax and London, will be used for diversion to America. The Auckland Province could easily supply 20,000 boxes of butter for shipment by this steamer, and it is suggested that, in event of a consignment being despatched to America, it should be under an optional bill of lading, which would permit its diversion to London, if necessary. The vessel could land the consignment in Halifax for Canadian consumption under the old duty of 1 per cent., the new duty of four cents does mot come into force until the middle of October. While in some quarters the belief is held that American orders will come to hand in time for the Limerick’s loading here, other authorities doubt whether there will be such an immediate demand, as .at the end of last week, the American and Canadian stocks were stated to be unusually large for this time of the year. Much depends upon the duration of the drought in regard to demand for New Zealand butter for America. The President has emergency powers to vary the United States duties b,y 50 per cent, either way. but in the event of his not taking this action butter imported from either Canada or New Zealand will bear 14 cents a lb.
