BEEF MARKET STEADY WESTFIELD STOCK SALE Westfield, 2.30 p.m. Beef met with a steady demand at late rates at Westfield today. Best young ox made up to 40s a hundred: ordinary prime ox made 36s to 38s a hundred. Best young cows and heifers made to 37s a hundred; ordinary cow. 27s to 33s a hundred. The offering was drawn from ail parts of the North Island, drafts of well-finished cattle coming from Feilding, Gisborne. Whakatane. and the North, as well as from Waikato and near Auckland vendors. Bidding was well sustained throughout. The quality was up to average standard, a few more station cattle appearing in the cow and heifer section than has been the case at late sales. Top price for the day and, incidentally, the highest price to date this season, was secured for an extra heavyprime show steer on account W. H. McLeod, Ilikurangi, which went to T. Collins, Avondale, alter spirited bidding at £l9 2s fid. One of the choicest quality lines of heavy prime steers in the yard came from Frank Vosper, Cambridge, to sell freely at from £ls 2s 6 to £l6 15s.
A truck of choice heavy prime steers on account Te Aroha Jockey Club made from £l6 2s 6cl to £l6 15s. One of the choicest quality lines of Hereford steers seen in the yards this winter came from A. Commons, Putaruru. to meet with keen competition at from £l3 7s fid to £ls 12s fid. The cattle were not very big in the bone, but they had been topped oft on turnips, and made a most attractive showing. Cattle from the Ngapuke Estate. Wairamarama, made from £l2 15s to £ 14.
A line of 31 prime station steers, showing slight signs of travel, on account of a Gisborne vendor, made from £l3 2s 6d to £ls 12s fid. Well-finished steers from the Feilding district made up to £l6. Extra heavy prime steers made to £l9 2s 6d; heavy prime, £l4 to £l6: medium, £l2 to £l3 15s; light and small, from £9. Heavy prime young cows and heifers made from £9 10s to £l2; medium, £7 5s to £9; light, from £6 to £7; unfinished and old, from £4.
Another very heavy yarding of calves, mostly small and fresh-dropped, came forward to meet with a steady demand at late rates. Runners made to £7 3s for a medium-framed particularly choice prime calf; heavy vealers made to £4 Ss. Small calves, fit for the bobby veal trade, made from 7s to 15s. Slightly bigger calves, from 07ie to six weeks old, went to butchers at 14s to .£2 10s.
